Geology and Natural Resources of Ghana: A Comprehensive Overview

Samuel Kwame Atta

Science / Earth Sciences / General

This book provides an all-encompassing summary of the geology of Ghana contextualized in relation to the West African Craton. Essential details of all the major belts and basins of the Birimian Supergroup are described. Furthermore, all the relevant aspects of the stratigraphy of the Voltaian Supergroup are discussed. The complexities of the Dahomeyide orogenic belts are also unraveled. Finally, Ghana's mineral and energy resources are showcased as well as geohazards emanating from seismic activities in the country. The aim of this book is to ensure a holistic understanding of the geology of the country.

This book will be a great textbook for undergraduate students and a quick reference for geoscience researchers, professionals and investors.

Samuel Kwame Atta was awarded his BSc. degree in geology from the University of Ghana in 2002 and an MPhil. degree in geology in 2007 from the same university. He was employed by the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) in November 2007, where he initially worked on the quality control of airborne geophysical data collected during the Mining Sector Support Programme (MSSP). He studied and obtained an additional MSc (Eng) degree in mining engineering specialising in mineral economics from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in 2019. Samuel has worked with the GGSA for two decades, rising to the position of Principal Geoscientist. His work focuses on the application of geophysical survey methods for geological mapping and mineral exploration. He was selected twice to participate in the Australian Awards Africa short course in geospatial information systems in 2014 and mineral and energy economics in 2018. Samuel has published three scientific research articles in the Journal of African Earth Sciences, Mineral Economics journal and CIM Journal. He also contributed a chapter to the book “Geology and Gold Mineralisation in Ghana” edited by Prof. E. D. Sunkari and Dr. S. Ali. He is a member of the Ghana Institution of Geoscientists (GhIG)
