This book offers a comprehensive exploration of emerging and improved clean energy technologies, presenting both current alternatives for sustainable power generation and innovative proposals to enhance their efficiency and impact. It examines microgrid topologies for distributed energy systems, new geothermal opportunities in Mexico, and multiple solar‑based approaches ranging from thermal energy and advanced concentrator designs to next‑generation materials for sunlight‑assisted processes such as low‑temperature photovoltaics, photocatalytic CO₂ reduction, and hydrogen production. The text also addresses electrolysis‑supported hydrogen use in combustion applications, advances in photovoltaic systems—including laser‑scribed thin‑film modules for agricultural settings—and the development of improved semiconductor materials. Finally, it analyzes biofuel production from biomass through diverse technological routes, evaluating their performance, economic feasibility, and potential contributions to the global energy transition.
Dra. Ángeles Mantilla is a Professor‑Researcher at CICATA Legaria of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, where she leads the Photocatalysis Laboratory. Her work focuses on photocatalytic mitigation of water and air pollution, as well as catalytic and photocatalytic processes for energy generation from conventional and renewable sources. Trained as a Chemical Engineer with graduate studies in industrial administration, materials science, and a PhD from CICATA Legaria, she has developed a research trajectory centered on catalysis, photocatalysis, and sustainable energy technologies.
Dr. Juan Manuel Sandoval Pineda is a Professor in the Postgraduate Program of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional and Head of the Hydrogen Technologies Laboratory at the Escuela Superior de Ingeniería Mecánica y Eléctrica, campus Azcapotzalco. His research focuses on the design and development of alkaline electrolyzers for dual hydrogen–hydrocarbon combustion processes and on advancing hydrogen generation technologies. Since 2012, he has led projects in hydrogen production and contributed to the training of specialized human resources in this field.
