Subsurface CO₂ Sequestration

A Thorough Analysis of Sustainable Emission Solutions and Regulatory Frameworks

Ebrahim Fathi | Fatemeh Belyadi

Science / Earth Sciences / Meteorology & Climatology

This book discusses multiple aspects of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies, investigating their critical role in addressing the environmental and economic challenges associated with excess carbon dioxide emissions. It highlights CCS as a viable long-term solution and emphasizes its significance within the broader framework of sustainable energy development. The authors analyze different CCS technologies, economic implications, regulatory frameworks, Class VI well permits, and CCS project lifecycles. In addition, the book presents real-world field case studies from CCS projects across the globe, providing practical insights into project implementation, operational challenges, risk management, and long-term storage integrity. This book offers a comprehensive understanding of how CCS can support global decarbonization efforts and shape a sustainable low-carbon future.

Dr. Fatemeh Belyadi is a senior reservoir engineer, author, entrepreneur, and educator specializing in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), geothermal energy, and unconventional oil and gas development. She earned her Ph.D. in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering from West Virginia University and currently serves as a Senior Reservoir Engineer at Pangea Geoscience. With over 15 years of experience across upstream and midstream sectors, she has held roles in academia and industry, including assistant professor, process engineer, and reservoir engineer. Her work focuses on subsurface characterization, reservoir modeling, and data-driven completion design optimization. She has authored numerous publications advancing sustainable energy and carbon management. Dr. Belyadi is also an author, known for “Hydraulic Fracturing in Unconventional Reservoirs” in both its first and second editions.

Dr. Ebrahim Fathi is a Professor in the Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering, recognized for pioneering research in energy, sustainability, and subsurface engineering. His expertise spans carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), engineered geothermal systems, AI-driven data analytics, hydraulic fracturing, and unconventional reservoir development. His work is supported by organizations such as DOE, NETL, RPSEA, and industry partners, reflecting its broad impact. He has led major CO₂ storage initiatives, including reduced-order modeling at Citronelle CCS project and contributions to the Illinois Basin–Decatur BECCS project. He has also characterized regional storage systems in the Tri-State CO₂ Storage Hub and evaluated geothermal and thermal energy storage at West Virginia University. Dr. Fathi has authored influential publications and books on hydraulic fracturing and received honors including the SPE Outstanding Technical Editor Award and the AIME Rossiter W. Raymond Award. He also serves as an editor for leading journals.
