Interest in training for diagnostic and interventional ultrasound is rapidly growing in Nephrology and Internal Medicine. Many residents and young specialists are eager to learn point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), gain hands-on experience with procedures such as percutaneous renal biopsy, or develop skills in vascular access management, which are often assigned to other professionals. Offering training in these subspecialties can effectively foster interest in Nephrology and help revitalize this increasingly overlooked field.   

This book, authored by a nephrologist with extensive expertise in diagnostics and intervention, offers essential technical knowledge of ultrasound, coupled with foundational insights into comparative anatomy and pathophysiology, which are vital for analyzing ultrasound and Doppler imaging. Ultimately, the objective of this text is to enhance practical skills, thereby improving patient care and enabling effective performance in daily clinical practice.

Professor Meola currently holds the position of affiliated professor at the Health Sciences Interdisciplinary Center at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa. He previously served as an aggregate professor of Nephrology at the University Hospital of Pisa. Furthermore, Professor Meola is currently also the coordinator of both the SIUMB School of Ultrasound in Nephrology and the SIMI School of Basic Ultrasound at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa. He has also contributed to establishing the University Master's Course in Clinical Ultrasound and Vascular Access Management at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, as well as postgraduate training courses at the University Hospital of Pisa. He is widely recognized as a leading expert in nephrology ultrasound, and through his work, multiple generations of specialists in this field have been trained and continue to be trained.
