Beginning with the ancient civilizations of the Fertile Crescent, Egypt, and India, the exploration then moves to the Greek intellectual revolution, where early thinkers like the Pre-Socratics and scholars of Alexandria laid the foundations of scientific thought. It examines Aristotle’s early theory of motion and the first attempts to understand the cosmos.

The medieval period is explored through two major themes: the persistence of motion and the Principle of Inertia, from Aristotle to Galileo, and the motion of the heavens, culminating in Copernicus’ radical shift. Bridging the medieval and modern eras, the book focuses on the period between Copernicus and Newton, delving into the works of Kepler, Galileo, Descartes, Huygens, and Newton. The journey culminates with the Newtonian Synthesis, encapsulating centuries of inquiry into a unified framework.

This textbook is designed for a one-semester history of physics course and serves as a foundational resource for introductory courses in the history and philosophy of science. It’s also suitable as supplementary material for students in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and related fields, as well as for philosophy and humanities courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The content is structured for a standard four-hour weekly course but can also be adapted for graduate programs in humanities-related fields.

Luiz Roberto Evangelista is a Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics at Universidade Estadual de Maringá (Paraná, Brazil) (Lre@dfi.uem.br). He received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics (field theory and particle physics) from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, in 1988. His research interests include complex fluids, complex systems, and the history of physics, with a focus on the mathematical physics of liquid crystals, normal and anomalous diffusion, adsorption-desorption phenomena, and modern boundary value problems, particularly in applications to liquid-crystalline systems and impedance spectroscopy. He is the author of several books on the history of physics, on the elasticity of liquid crystals, and fractional calculus applied to anomalous diffusion phenomena, including the more recent "Fractional Diffusion Equations and Anomalous Diffusion" (Cambridge University Press, 2018) and "An Introduction to Anomalous Diffusion and Relaxation" (Springer, 2023).

Publication Date:

14 August 2026

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032206527

Format:

Paperback / softback

Page Count:

371
