Dr. Allan Goldstein attended Yale College, graduating in 1989 with B.S. and M.S. degrees in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry. He then matriculated at Harvard Medical School, obtaining his M.D. degree in 1993 in the Harvard-M.I.T. Division of Health Sciences and Technology. Dr. Goldstein completed his surgical training at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1993-2000, followed by a fellowship in pediatric surgeryat Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center from 2000-2002. He returned to Harvard in 2002 to join the Department of Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was named Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2013, Surgeon-in-Chief of MassGeneral for Children in 2014, and the Marshall K. Bartlett Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School in 2016.

 

Dr. Goldstein directs a basic science research laboratory that has been funded by the National Institutes of Health since 2004 and also by foundation and industry grants. His research focuses on the enteric nervous system, the neuronal network that regulates normal gastrointestinal function. His area of clinical and academic interest relates to neurointestinal diseases, including Hirschsprung disease, a congenital disorder of the intestine in which children are born without nerve cells in their colon. He is co-director of the Pediatric Neurogastroenterology Program and the Centerfor Neurointestinal Health at Massachusetts General Hospital and is actively engaged in clinical and translational research projects aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of neurointestinal disorders in children. His bibliography includes over 130 peer-reviewed journal articles, and numerous national and international lectures.
