Handbook on How to Build Superintendent-Board Relationships

John A. Maloy

Education / Administration / School Superintendents & Principals

As the role and expectations of the superintendency change, the pressures also tend to change and become more complex, thus the need for a collaborative relationship between the superintendent and the school board intensifies. Handbook on How to Build Superintendent-Board Relationships provides valuable real-world strategies and scenarios on how to navigate the dynamics of superintendent-board working relationships; highlights successful practices for addressing superintendent-board conflict and dysfunction; and serves as a template for successful superintendent-board governance and operation in order to achieve the ultimate goal of high performing schools.
John Maloy, with four decades of experience in public education, including 14 years serving as a superintendent, Maloy's expertise of this subject matter grew from: observing, living, and working through the complexities of the superintendent's role and the challenges of developing and maintaining a positive working relationship with elected board members. Maloy earned his Ed.D. and Ed.S. from Indiana University Bloomington in educational policy and leadership, his M.S. in secondary education from IUPU Indianapolis, and his B.S. in secondary education Social Studies from Butler University in Indianapolis.
