This volume contains chronological lists of creation in the peerages of England and Great Britain 1649-1800 and of Ireland 1603-1898 providing details of the grantees and the peerages conferred, indicating any special features and including full details of the sources used.

• Each entry specifies the date of creation, the names of the grantee and both the principal and any subordinate titles conferred
• Includes the sources from which the information is derived, together with an indication of where the texts of the patents of creation are to be found
• Details are also provided where a peerage was granted with a special limitation in remainder
• Based on a systematic examination of the documents of creation which has led to the correction of numerous errors - this is of particular value in the case of Ireland where the public records were destroyed in 1922

John Sainty worked in the House of Lords, 1959–1970, 1974–1990, retiring as clerk of the parliaments. From 1970 to 1974 he worked at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London, compiling several volumes on the personnel of government departments, 1660–1870. He has published widely on the House of Lords and its personnel. He has also served as a commissioner on the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts, 1991–2003, and is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, Royal Historical Society, and the Institute of Historical Research.
