This first book-length scholarly investigation of queer digital citizenship in Africa foregrounds agency, resistance, and worldmaking in online spaces.

Here contributors from the length and breadth of Africa offer in-depth case studies on diverse issues such as WhatsApp activism, visual archives, playful aesthetics, queer archives, digital refusal, and encrypted storytelling and counterpublics. Throughout, the authors discover innovative interdisciplinary, intersectional perspectives that create new dialogues between queer theory, African decolonial thought, digital studies, and feminist technoscience, ultimately finding new ways of understanding what queer Africans are doing when they perform citizenship, cultivate kinship, and navigate surveillance and structural erasure via digital platforms.

Through these discussions, this book makes important interventions into global debates on digital culture by centring African epistemologies and challenging Northern paradigms of visibility, identity, and civic participation. By treating queer African digital life not merely as an object of study, but rather as a site of theoretical innovation, the volume offers new vocabularies and ethical orientations for reimagining citizenship in the digital age.

Tanja Bosch is Associate Professor of Media Studies and Production in the Centre for Film and Media Studies at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where she also holds the position of Deputy Dean of Research and Postgraduate Affairs. She has published in the field of radio studies in South Africa as well as in the area of social media activism.

Nyx McLean is Head of Research at Eduvos, a private higher education institution in South Africa. Nyx is a transdisciplinary researcher focused on queer digital life and the creation of safe, inclusive online spaces. They have led projects on technology-facilitated gender-based violence, contributed to the Feminist Internet Research Network, and regularly consult on inclusive digital policy and practice.

Tony Roberts is a Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex, where he works on digital inequalities and digital rights. He is currently the Principal Investigator on the GCRF-UKRI-funded African Digital Rights Network.
