This book provides an unflinching look at the real experiences of the students as they navigate the complexities of identity, culture, and belonging in a school system that claims to offer equal chances for all. Through in-depth case studies and analysis of students and schools in Scotland, Nighet Riaz uncovers how well-intentioned policies can have unintended consequences, and how the perspectives of students, teachers, and youth workers reveal both challenges and opportunities for creating truly inclusive education. The book presents new research carried out in Scottish schools, based on interviews with students, school leaders and policy makers. These interviews focus on ethnic minority students including those from Gypsy, Roma and Showpeople (GRSTB), African heritage, Black, Muslim and asylum seekers and focus on the support they receive to move on to a positive destination of further or higher education, employment or training. The book amplifies the voices of young people themselves as they share their dreams, frustrations, and ideas for reimagining education.
