Bloomsbury Handbook of American Philosophies

Terrance MacMullan | Sergio Gallegos Ordorica

PHI050000

The Bloomsbury Handbook of American Philosophies represents the full breadth of philosophy across the Americas by exploring texts by African American, Asian American, Native American, Caribbean, and Latin American philosophers.

Contextualizing and illuminating the thinkers, debates and problems of an expanded American canon, this handbook is at the forefront of the rapidly growing field of Inter-American philosophy.

A team of rising and established scholars draw on approaches engaged with classical texts and neglected figures and in conversation with history, anthropology and literature. They address debates around issues of race, gender, culture and colonialism, tackling philosophical themes shared across the Americas and traditions including pragmatism, feminism and transcendentalism. Featuring critical and historical perspective on the thinkers of a pluralistic American tradition they connect lesser-known indigenous figures with major intellectuals including Jane Addams, Aimé Césaire, Alain Locke, Leonard Harris, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Gregory Fernando Pappas.

This pluralistic and inclusive handbook illustrates the richness and breadth of the philosophical traditions that have flourished throughout the Americas. It showcases the vibrancy of American philosophies. For students and scholars alike it presents a valuable and essential research tool to the history of philosophy in the Americas.
