His work focuses on social change and collective action, especially in Western Europe since 1500. His recent books include \u003ci\u003eCoercion, Capital, and European States\u003c\/i\u003e (Blackwell, 1989; second paperback edition, 1992), \u003ci\u003eCities and the Rise of States in Europe, AD 100-1800\u003c\/i\u003e (1994) and \u003ci\u003ePopular Contention in Great Britain, 1758-1834\u003c\/i\u003e (1995).
