Containing essays by chemists, geochemists, oceanographers, aquatic chemists and environmental engineers, it progresses from simple concepts and laboratory studies to applications in natural water, soils and geochemical systems. Topics include kinetics as a discipline, environmental factors in controlling the rate of chemical transformations, the use of linear free energy relationships in bridging the gap between kinetics and equilibria. Chapters also discuss the role of interfaces, especially solid-water interfaces, and special attention is given to the kinetics of surface reactions. Addresses the range of topics that need to be assessed before treating the dynamics of real systems is possible.

WERNER STUMM is Professor and Head of the Institute for Water Resources and Water Pollution Control associated with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland.
