Among those commemorated by a special day in the Church of England's Alternative Service Book of 1980 are nineteen men and one woman, Josephine Butler, who died since the Reformation. They are as diverse as Thomas More, Charles I, Bunyan, the Wesleys, Wilberforce and Keble. Alternative Saints examines the lives of each and how they, rather than others proposed, such as Florence Nightingale and David Livingstone, came to be chosen.
