Victor; Mito, Hiromichi

The purpose of this book is to address older adults’ musical group activities and their relation to quality of life in Japan, situated on a crossroad between deep Eastern cultural traditions and broad contemporary innovations and Western influences. This is the first book that offers both insider and outsider perspectives on older adults’ music participation in Japan. It is the result of a collaborative effort of a team of academics in Japan led by a Fulbright researcher from the United States, who resided and worked on the project in Japan for six months. The collaboration continued for a few years beyond the Fulbright residency period.

The book consists of 10 chapters in three parts. The first part includes an introductory chapter that sets the stage with strong cultural traditions in the contemporary ambience for older adults’ music participation. Part two contains studies of seven diverse cases jointly conducted by native Japanese researchers and a researcher with Chinese-American background. The majority of the researchers received training in the UK and the US. This allows each study with built-in perspectives from within and outside of Japan and with deep Asian, Japanese, and Western insights. These case studies are set in rural areas (Kojima, Nishio, and Uonuma), mid-size cities (Miyazaki and Sendai), world class metropolises (Nagoya and Tokyo), and suburban areas (Odaka and Seto). Three of the case studies include non-musical groups in comparison with the musical groups. Part three contains two chapters. One is a synthesis of the case studies in the seven locations, identifying the main factors that make older adults’ music participation positive and impactful to their quality of life. The final chapter includes implications relevant to older adults’ music participation in support of their quality of life. Recommendations can be applicable far beyond the locales of the cases being studied.

Details

Published by: Springer

Publication Date: 2026-01-03

Format: Hardcover

ISBN-13: 9783032012470

DOI: 10.1007/978-3-032-01248-7

Dimensions: 235cm x155cm

Pages: 188

Current Research in Systematic Musicology: A Perspective of Complex Systems

Sawicki, Jakub

Offering a groundbreaking interdisciplinary perspective, this book explores the fundamental mechanisms behind music perception by bridging music psychology with computational neuroscience. Focusing on the concept of identity, the volume brings together issues as diverse as belonging to an ethnic or cultural group, identifying with certain sexualities or being able to deduce the historical or geographical context of a game. This volume explores whether the musical and sound identities linked to video games are based on clichés and stereotyped arrangements that span cultures and times. It includes case studies that analyse the mechanisms used by game producers, composers and sound designers to “characterise” and represent different identities to broad audiences of potential players, as well as how the players perceive these sonic inputs. By mixing theory and practice, the book’s goal is to offer detailed technological insights and a deep understanding of music processing applications.

As a substantial extension, the textbook’s second edition introduces the FMP (fundamentals of music processing) notebooks, which provide additional audio-visual material and Python code examples that implement all computational approaches step by step. Using Jupyter notebooks and open-source web applications, the FMP notebooks yield an interactive framework that allows students to experiment with their music examples, explore the effect of parameter settings, and understand the computed results by suitable visualizations and sonifications. The FMP notebooks are available from the author’s institutional web page at the International Audio Laboratories Erlangen.

Details

Published by: Springer

Publication Date: 2022-04-11

Format: Paperback

ISBN-13: 9783030698102

DOI: 10.1007/978-3-030-69808-9

Dimensions: 235cm x155cm

Pages: 495

Music Representation and Transformation in Software: Structure and Algorithms in Python

Pazel, Donald P.

This book takes the reader on a journey through music concepts in an organized approach that develops music essentials from the concepts of tone, pitch, and time, through notes, intervals, chords, and scores while at the same time interpreting these elements as software artifacts. Close attention is paid to the organization of and relationships amongst these concepts and their representation as Python classes and objects, to learn about music from a software design viewpoint.

The first part of the book focuses on software representation of the main elements found in music theory. Its objective is to provide direction to students on how to build a music software model from basic concepts and grow towards more complex concepts. Chapter by chapter, music concepts are introduced, and each is broken apart into related data properties and methods with the goal that by the end of this section, the reader will have developed a relatively complete library of music elements in software. The second part takes on the task of applying that foundation to the subject of “music transformations”. The focus is on localized transformations, that is, transformations isolated to a few measures. After a general introduction, the discussion includes topics of pitch assignment, key change, melodic inversion, melodic shaping, harmonic transcription, retrograde, melodic search and dilation.

This textbook is designed as a principal or supplemental source for computer science, software engineering, and programming courses. The UNCRC can be considered a toolkit that expresses a normative order, that is, a human rights standard for how to legitimately protect children, and to facilitate processes of participation. For many children and adolescents’ music is a significant source for gaining health and social/cultural participation. Music then, has the potential for realizing values inherent in the UNCRC. The main aim of this book is to utilize The United Nations Conventions on the Rights (UNCRC) as a tool to give an overview of relevant themes, and to critically explore what implications the convention has for the profession of music therapy, and more specifically, music therapy for children and adolescents.

Details

Published by: Palgrave Macmillan

Publication Date: 2025-07-04

Format: Hardcover

ISBN-13: 9783031857232

DOI: 10.1007/978-3-031-85724-9

Dimensions: 210.0cm x148.0cm

Pages: 220.0

Pedagogies for Later-Life Music Learning and Participation: Facilitating Creative Musical Development in Later-Life

Pedagogies for Later-Life Music Learning and Participation

Facilitating Creative Musical Development in Later-Life

Contributors: Creech, Andrea; Enright, Colin

This open access book presents evidence-based participant and facilitator perspectives on later-life music learning and participation. The music of Pierre Henry, Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, Daft Punk and many others has introduced new sounds, improbable rhythms and a unique approach to composition and notation.

Electronic machines have become essential: they have built and influenced the music of the most recent decades and set the trend for future productions.

This book explores the theory and practice related to the different machines which constitute the universe of musical electronics, omitting synthesizers which are treated in other works. Sequencers, drum machines, samplers, groove machines and vocoders from 1960 to today are studied in their historical, physical and theoretical context. More detailed approaches to the Elektron Octatrack sequencer-sampler and the Korg Electribe 2 groove machine are also included.

Jean-Michel Réveillac has been a specialist in sound processing for more than 30 years. Besides theoretical investigations, discourse analysis is central in a number of application areas such as dialogue and negotiation, the semantic web, question answering or authoring systems. Music is also a natural language, more abstract and mathematical, which follows very strict construction principles. However, there is very limited and no recent literature on Music Discourse analysis using computational principles. This book aims at developing a central issue in musical discourse: modeling rhetoric and argumentation. It also contributes to the development of high-level multimedia annotation schemes for non-verbal communication.

Patrick Saint-Dizier, Senior researcher at CNRS, Toulouse, France.

Publication Date:

06 October 2014

Publisher:

Wiley

Imprint:

Wiley-ISTE

ISBN-13:

9781848215610

Format:

Hardback

Page Count:

208

Weight (oz):

16.16

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0710/9545/1788/files/9781848215610_53d9d2ec-80b8-4b08-ae2d-05088403119f.jpg?v=1780158347
9780470868508
Celebrity Sells

Celebrity Sells

Hamish Pringle

Business & Economics / Decision-Making & Problem Solving

Celebrities have always captured the imagination of the public. How can we engineer "machine listening" systems that achieve this perceptual feat?

Albert Bregman's book Auditory Scene Analysis, published in 1990, drew an analogy between the perception of auditory scenes and visual scenes, and described a coherent framework for understanding the perceptual organization of sound. His account has stimulated much interest in computational studies of hearing. Such studies are motivated in part by the demand for practical sound separation systems, which have many applications including noise-robust automatic speech recognition, hearing prostheses, and automatic music transcription. Music is not merely a form of leisure or entertainment: it is central to the very formation and reproduction of human societies.

The authors pursue this argument through a wide-ranging assessment of some of the major cultural theoretical contributions to understanding music. Theories of culture, linguistic theories, structuralist and post-structuralist theories and psychoanalytic theories of music are carefully explained and critically examined. The authors then develop their own account of music as a non-referential yet material form of human expression which embodies and conveys principles of symbolic structuring. A year in which Levit spoke out against hate and received death threats in response. A year in which he found his voice and found himself – as an artist and as a person.

Igor Levit was born in 1987 in Gorky, Russia (now Nizhny Novgorod) and moved to Germany with his family at the age of eight. The course, commonly referred to later as the Darmstadt course, was intended to familiarize young composers and musicians with the music that, only a few years earlier, had been denounced as degenerate by the Nazi regime, and it soon developed into one of the most important events in contemporary music.

Having returned to Germany in 1949 from exile in the United States, Adorno was a regular participant at Darmstadt from 1950 on. In 1955 he gave a series of lectures on the young Schoenberg, using the latter’s work to illustrate the relation between tradition and the avant-garde. Adorno’s three double-length lectures on the young Schoenberg, in which he spoke as a passionate advocate for the composer whom Boulez had declared dead, were his first at Darmstadt to be recorded on tape. The relation between tradition and the avant-garde was the leitmotif of the lectures that followed, which continued over the next decade. Adorno also dealt in detail with problems of composition in contemporary music, and he often accompanied his lectures with off-the-cuff musical improvisations. The five lecture courses he gave at Darmstadt between 1955 and 1966 were all recorded and subsequently transcribed, and they are published here for the first time in English.

This volume is a unique document on the theory and history of the New Music. Venerated as rock’s one true genius, Dylan is considered responsible for introducing a new range of topics and new lyrical complexity into popular music. Without Bob Dylan, rock critic Dave Marsh once claimed, there would be no popular music as we understand it today.
As such an exalted figure, Dylan has been the subject of countless books and intricate scholarship considering various dimensions of both the man and his music. This book places new emphasis on Dylan as a rock star. Whatever else Dylan is, he is a star – iconic, charismatic, legendary, enigmatic. No one else in popular music has maintained such star status for so long a period of time.

Showing how theories of stardom can help us understand both Bob Dylan and the history of rock music, Lee Marshall provides new insight into how Dylan’s songs acquire meaning and affects his relationship with his fans, his critics and the recording industry. Marshall discusses Dylan’s emergence as a star in the folk revival (the “spokesman for a generation”) and the formative role that Dylan plays in creating a new type of music – rock – and a new type of star. Bringing the book right up to date, he also sheds new light on how Dylan’s later career has been shaped by his earlier star image and how Dylan repeatedly tried to throw off the limitations and responsibilities of his stardom.

The book concludes by considering the revival of Dylan over the past ten years and how Dylan’s stardom has developed in a way that contains, but is not overshadowed by, his achievements in the 1960s.

Lee Marshall is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Bristol.

Publication Date:

24 September 2007

Publisher:

Polity Press

Imprint:

Polity

ISBN-13:

9780745636429

Format:

Paperback / softback

Page Count:

300

Weight (oz):

14.56

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0710/9545/1788/files/9780745636429_e5d4f9f2-2e76-4db1-8021-5506242d4984.jpg?v=1780102040
9780764550805
Blues For Dummies

Blues For Dummies

Lonnie Brooks | Cub Koda | Wayne Baker Brooks | Dan Aykroyd

Music / Genres & Styles / Blues

Get your mojo working as you take a musical trip from the Mississippi Delta to Chicago's gritty South Side and points beyond with Blues For Dummies, an insightful, toe-tappin', music lovers' guide to the blues. Music can enhance well-being, interpersonal relationships, cultural tolerance, and civil cohesion. At the same time, music can be a tool of persuasion or ideology. Thinking about music helps bring into focus the values that are mobilised in today’s culture wars.
