N. Ghista (Based on the Opening Address at the International Conference on Biomedical Physics & Mathematics of the Gauss Symposium, August 2, 1993 at Ludwig Maximillians Universitiit, Munchen, Germany) The traditional practice of Biomedical physics has now expanded to involve multiple aspects of medical practice: development of systems and technology in medical monitoring (e. g. , PET visualization of brain receptors to identify neuronal dysfunction), diagnosis (e. g. , computer-aided echocardiographic texture analysis to detect myocardial infarcts), organ support (e. g. , peritoneal dialysis), and therapeutic function (e. g. , encapsulation of insulin-producing pancreatic islet cells for treatment of diabetes). However, is Biomedical Physics a relatively new field? Not really, although we may have opened up new vistas of it, as presented in this book. Let us recall some early and well-known physician-cum-biomedical physicists. Both physical and physiological scientists will know of Jean Poiseuille (1799-1869), physician and physiologist; he measured blood pressure with a mercury manometer while being a medical student in Paris, received his medical degree in 1928, and then went on to describe the law of viscous flow (applicable to arteriolar flow).

Details

Published by: Vieweg+Teubner Verlag

Publication Date: 2012-03-02

Format: Paperback

ISBN-10: 9783322850195

ISBN-13: 9783322850195

DOI: 10.1007/978-3-322-85017-1

Dimensions: 240cm x170cm

Pages: 545

Fundamentals of Medicine for Biomedical Engineering

Hosseinzadeh , Hamid

This concise book explains the basics of medicine in simple language for biomedical engineering students. The authors of this book have therefore provided a complete overview of the biology, and behaviour of arthropod ectoparasites along with the pathology and treatment of diseases in livestock and companion animals of temperate habitats.
This is the only up-to-date book available written specifically for practitioners and students of veterinary medicine, animal husbandry and applied animal sciences. Such a unique volume is essential because in veterinary parasitology, ectoparasites such as the lice, mites, ticks, fleas or dipteran agents of myiasis assume far greater prominence than in other parasitological disciplines. Ectoparasite infestation of domestic and companion animals, therefore, has overt clinical features requiring a distinct approach to diagnosis and control. From gynecological research on enslaved women’s bodies to nonconsensual practice on anesthetized patients, the pelvic exam as we know it today carries the burden of its sordid past. Its story is one of pain and pleasure, life-saving discoveries and heartbreaking encounters, questionable procedures and triumphant breakthroughs. Drawing on previously unpublished archival sources, along with interviews with patients, providers, and activists, Kline traces key moments and movements in gynecological history, from the surgeons of the nineteenth century to the OB/GYNs of today.

This powerful book reminds us that the pelvic exam is has never been “just” a medical procedure, and that we can no longer afford to let the pelvic exam remain unexamined.

Wendy Kline is Dema G. Webster, Editor-in-Chief This comprehensive encyclopedia, the work of more than 400 contributors, includes 266 articles on devices and instrumentation that are currently or likely to be useful in medicine and biomedical engineering. The four volumes include 3,022 pages of text that concentrates on how technology assists the branches of medicine. The articles emphasize the contributions of engineering, physics, and computers to each of the general areas of medicine, and are designed not for peers, but rather for workers from related fields who wish to take a first look at what is important in the subject. Highly recommended for university biomedical engineering and medical reference collections, and for anyone with a science background or an interest in technology. Includes a 78-page index, cross-references, and high-quality diagrams, illustrations, and photographs. 1988 (0 471-82936-6) 4-Volume Set Introduction to Radiological Physics and Radiation Dosimetry Frank Herbert Attix provides complete and useful coverage of radiological physics. Unlike most treatments of the subject, it encompasses radiation dosimetry in general, rather than discussing only its applications in medical or health physics. The treatment flows logically from basics to more advanced topics. Coverage extends through radiation interactions to cavity theories and dosimetry of X-rays, charged particles, and neutrons. Several important subjects that have never been thoroughly analyzed in the literature are treated here in detail, such as charged-particle equilibrium, broad-beam attenuation and geometries, derivation of the Kramers X-ray spectrum, and the reciprocity theorem, which is also extended to the nonisotropic homogeneous case. 1986 (0 471-01146-0) 607 pp. Medical Physics John R. Cameron and James G. Skofronick This detailed text describes medical physics in a simple, straightforward manner. It discusses the physical principles involved in the control and functon of organs and organ systems such as the eyes, ears, lungs, heart, and circulatory system. There is also coverage of the application of mechanics, heat, light, sound, electricity, and magnetism to medicine, particularly of the various instruments used for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. 1978 (0 471-13131-8) 615 pp.

About the authors L. Through skin, we speak: when we display it, when we tan it, when we tattoo it, or when we mute it by covering it with clothes. Skin exhibits social relationships, displays power and the effects of power, explains many things about who we are, how others perceive us and how we exist in the world. It dispels many misconceptions about stem cells—especially that they can be miracle cells that can cure all ills. Fully revised and expanded, this new edition updates the subject for pre-clinical and clinical veterinary students in a comprehensive manner. Individual sections deal with bacteriology, mycology and virology. Written by an academic team with many years of teaching experience, the book provides concise descriptions of groups of microorganisms and the diseases which they cause. Microbial pathogens are discussed in separate chapters which provide information on the more important features of each microorganism and its role in the pathogenesis of diseases of animals. The international and public health significance of these pathogens are reviewed comprehensively. The final section is concerned with the host and is organized according to the body system affected.

Tables, boxes and flow diagrams provide information in an easily assimilated format.
